What is Collective Intelligence
“Like-minded individuals gather online to embrace common enterprises, which often involve access and processing information. In such a world… everyone knows something, nobody knows everything, and what any one person knows can be tapped by the group as a whole.”

What is Participatory Culture?
Participatory media include (but aren’t limited to) blogs, wikis, RSS, maps, tagging and social bookmarking, music-photo-video sharing, mashups, podcasts, and videoblogs.

YouthLAB
Collective intelligence and Participatory Media is a large part of what we are doing in YouthLAB. When we divvy up the work and when we become peer-to-peer sharers of knowledge and media, we are becoming a more democratic and participatory global community.

A fun day where we spin our knowledge, activism strategies and/or skills and become peer-to-peer trainers. What do you know, what do you care about, what are your skills and what have you made? What you present will help us make decisions about how to divvy up work in the last three workshop days.

2:00-3:00 Discussion - How Can You Use Participatory Culture for Social Benefit and Action?

According to Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone and the concept’s leading proponent (though not its originator), social capital “refers to the collective value of all ‘social networks‘ and the inclinations that arise from these networks to do things for each other”. According to Putnam and his followers, social capital is a key component to building and maintaining democracy. Putnam says that social capital is declining in the United States. This is seen in lower levels of trust in government and lower levels of civic participation. Putnam also says that television and urban sprawl have had a significant role in making America far less connected.

Some educations theorists believe that social capital is also a key component to the success of young people in school and the workplace. Studies show that social capital plays as much as a role as actual classroom performance in attaining entrance into colleges and careers of choice.

Related to the moral panic model is the lament that young people are uninvolved in political life, apathetic and civically disengaged. “They don”t vote, they don’t care about politics.”

According to a study funded by Pew Charitable Trusts, many young adults disagree with these criticism, citing a statistical increase in volunteerism and voting. They also link a disdain for politics to corruption and lack of accountability to young people’s needs and concerns.They argue that their definitions for what constitutes engagement in civic life - is different than adult stereotypes.

For example,  how youth choose to spend their money can attest to their sense of social responsibility in the realm of consumerism. Youth often use social networking sites to build connections around issues and ideas. The largest student walk out in the country protesting unfair immigration policies was organized by youth on MySpace.

Several social scientists are finding evidence that the interactivity of certain video games and other online activities actually increases the sense of agency and decision-making ability of youth.

How do you define civic engagement? How do you use your digital native culture to engage in political life? Can you use youth culture to build connections, debate ideas, and mobilize each other to take actions of social benefit?

DIVVYING UP THE WORK

YOUTHLAB MY MAP (Team of Two)
Getting map back up to speed. This means getting addresses from people and pushpinning their homes and embedding photos, adding Chicago landmarks, adding journeys and migration histories, developing a color coding system, bring map to life.
You can also embed short video clips! So maybe we need to do a group photo outside??

PUBLICITY/PROMOTION/DESIGN (Team of Three)
•    We need an electronic event announcement for Facebook
•    We need a photoshop flyer announcing event to print out for distribution and posting
•    We need to email these to all  YouthLABBERS so they can promote to their own networks

BARBADOS TRIVIA QUESTIONS (Team of Three)
At 1:00 we will be able to interview youth from Street-Level Youth Media. You must prepare questions for three groups. Each group should have different questions.

WHAT EVERY YOUTHLABBER NEEDS TO DO
A. Invite your network and family to screening via facebook, email blast or in person
B. Add to map:
1) your house
2) your families migration story
3) a photo of some other landmark in your community (school, etc.)
4) a dream of where you want to go in yellow ink
5.) Read responses to our last video
6) Post any sites you will use for Collective Intelligence Day to Deli.icio.us
7) Post comment to Malcolm X or a Girl Like Me responding to what other say

There is much to explore in the YouthLAB site beyond the main page. On the main page you will see daily entries posted by the youth participants which often represent digital content they have produced.By clicking on the comments under the posting you are likely to see lively and intellectual debates going on. By exploring the categories to the right you will get a feeling for our curricular and educational philosophy guiding the workshop.

TIP - Don’t skip the COMMENTS because this is where the fascinating online conversations and interpretive discussions occur and where YOU can add your own voice.

On the right of the main page you will see CATEGORIES. The categories that are posted to the main page are:

INTERPRETIVE DISCUSSIONS are pages where on-going dialogue can occur around the interpretation of a particular text. This can be audio, writing, articles, fiction, video or photos. Anyone can post a piece of content and ask a question to begin an interpretive discussion.

TIP: There is a really fascinating discussion going on in the COMMENTS section under the Interpetive Discussion called A GIRL LIKE ME. Check it out.

YOUTHLAB POSTS are pages where youth post their content or any blog they wish.

The other categories represent our curricular and pedagogical process which we make completely transparent and available on the site. These categories include:

The DAILY SCHEDULE which is just that. YouthLAB participants can check in on our agenda for the day the minute they arrive in the morning or the night before.

UNDERSTANDING AND USING THIS SITE contains reflections and blog posts by facilitators as we connect our curriculum to a public.

REFERENCE is a sections where youth and facilitators can post quotes, photos, books, and videos that we want to share with each other.

VIDEO TEXTS are videos that we use to generate interpretive discussions. Sometimes these are self-authored and sometimes they are embedded from other sites.

TUTORIALS contains technical how to guides for YouthLAB participants and resource materials.

And our TAG CLOUD actually contains most of our resources and links that are used in the workshop on a daily basis. Our TAG CLOUD is mad eup of links provided not only by the facilitators but by the youth themselves.

Interview Do’s and Don’t

Interview Techniques

•    Have interview subjects state their name and that they agree to do the interview on camera
•    Set the tone with professionalism and respect (make the subject feel comfortable)
•    Don’t just act interested - be interested (Make eye contact)
•    Avoid yes or no questions
•    Listen to the responses and be prepared to follow up if necessary
•    Make your questions specific and not too general
•    Do not allow the subject to take the microphone from you
•    Find interesting people with a diversity of perspectives

Composition

•    Set up the shot and take control of the scene
•    Make sure the light source is directed at the subject’s face
•    Get close to the subject and hold camera steady
•    Use the rule of thirds and proper lead room (medium or head shots)

Sound

•    Always use headphones and an external microphone
•    Remember the two second rule
•    Make every effort to avoid loud background noises (els, loud buses)

Approaching People

Shooting B-Roll
Your video will be much more interesting if you shoot cutaways or B-roll. You can overlay these images on top of the audio of the interviews to illustrate what the person is saying. Or you can create short music montage sequences in between questions. You should shoot footage of yourselves doing the projects, footage and stills that show people in Chicago, give evidence to class differences, inequality, segregation and the opposite of these things as well.

EMBEDDING INTO OUR SITE VIA MOTIONBOX

1.    Once the video is uploaded to Motionbox, double click on the video.
2.    Copy the embedding  code to the right of the video
3.    Go to our Wordpress site (www.youthlab.net) login to post using your password
4.    In the dashboard, click on Write a Post.
5.    Now enter the title of the post (name of video), enter description under visual.
6.    To embed the video, now click on the word CODE.
7.    Paste the code from Motionbox
8.    Hit publish to place on site!
9.    Now you can view it and click edit to make any necessary changes.

TUTORIAL ON UPLOADING TO YOUTUBE

YouthLABBERS should use the following steps:

1.    Export your finished video from Final Cut Pro to Quicktime in full quality
2.    Under Applications, open up RooVideoLite, select best and hit encode. Now browse to find the video you just exported or if it is an iMovie – just select the iMovie file under the Movies Folder. (This will take a few minutes)
3.    Go to youtube.com and sign in with youthlab login and password
4.    Click on Upload video and complete form
5.    Browse to find the roovideolite version which will be in a folder called RooVideo under Movies. The file must be under 100mbs.
6.    Wait to upload – may take up to an hour.
